A comic genre of the traditional Japanese theater, Kyogen was established during the 14th century and boasts about its repertoire of almost 250 short sketches. Nowadays its unique theater form refers to more than 600 years of refinement of theatrical expression: how to speak, how to move, dance, laugh, cry or fight to achieve one purpose: to make the audience laugh.
Based on a spirit of affirmation, Kyogen plots do not describe even thieves as truly wicked people. Moreover, in contrast to No, Japan's oldest form of musical theater, Kyogen does not place emphasis on chanting and dance. Its outstanding characteristic is the spoken lines accompanied by dramatic movement without any requirements for lights, sound and props, etc. Just relying on their bodies, voices and precise timing, actors are skillful at entertaining the audience.
