Situated on the banks of the Sumida River,
by Tokyo Bay, Edo became the shogunate's
center of power in the early 17th century
and has flourished as Japan's political,
economic and cultural center for more than
400 years. When the Edo period came to its
end and the Meiji period began in 1968,
the emperor made it the nation's capital,
renamed "Tokyo." Today Tokyo plays
a significant role on the world stage in
terms of finance, commerce, trade. Moreover,
the recently published Michelin Red Guide,
Tokyo, has evaluated the city as a truly
gourmet destination, choosing eight three-star
restaurants there.
