Shirakawago Village
A remote mountain region designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1995, Shirakawago, one of the heaviest snowfall areas in Japan, is famous for its gassho-zukuri thatched-roof farmhouses characterized by their nearly 60-degree steep roofs. In winter a heavy snowfall of more than two meters is expected in the area. In 1981 the snow accumulated to a depth of 4.5 meters. The attic was used for sericulture.
In ancient China it was considered impossible to combine six focal themes of beauty: extensiveness, quiet seclusion, artificial construction, antique elegance, abundant water and wide prospect. The name Kenrokuen, which literally means, "a garden combining six," stems from the fact that the garden successfully exhibits a harmonious coexistence of the six attributes of beauty.

We recommend taking a pleasurable stroll while enjoying breathtaking landscapes featuring the thatched-roof houses dotted in fields or climbing up to a rise where you can overlook the splendid village.
