Located in Higashichayagai, a district which used to provide entertainment for townspeople and men of culture in the Edo Period, Hotaruya is a sophisticated Japanese restaurant that takes advantage of its location. In the Edo Period a chaya was a venue for relishing sumptuous cuisine and alcohol beverages complemented by the professional dances and art of conversation that geisha girls offered to guests. It was considered the ultimate form of luxury. At Hotaruya geisha entertainers can be invited upon request to get the feel of this luxurious experience of the past. It is important to note that they don't, as a rule, accept customers they don't know.
The restaurant features meticulously lacquered lattice windows in the exterior, a counter made of a huge single plank of cedar, more than ten layers of mud walls that have been painted again and again for renovations over 180 years. The surrounding dim streetlamps help the property create a distinctive atmosphere with its long history.

Hotaruya's cuisine is prepared with fresh ingredients of seasonal fish from the nearby Japan Sea and vegetables unique to this region. Enjoy both the first-class cuisine and entertainment at Hotaruya in the ancient atmosphere of the Edo Period.
