Yamashiro Onsen
is a hot spring town located far west of Tokyo and
nearly on the Sea of Japan. It is said that the
origin of the hot spring dates back to the episode
when Gyouki, a Buddhist priest, discovered a spring
where he saw a three-leg bird healing its own wounds
in the spring. |

Araya-totoan
is endowed with 100 thousand liters of water per
day sourced from natural hot springs, an incredible
amount that no other onsen property in the same
area can match. The property takes full advantage
of the vast amount of onsen water as some rooms
feature an en-suite outdoor bath sourced from natural
hot springs. Outside the front door you can see
the hot spring source welling up and many guests
drink it there in the mornings and evenings. |

Araya-totoan
is a long-established inn that has lasted for 18
generations since its establishment. The long history
and tradition can be felt everywhere in the property.
Walking down the corridor through the back garden
leads you to Arisugawa-sanso, a detached
wooden house that functions as a bar at night and
provides you with a splendid view of the illuminated
garden, a welcome complement to your beverages and
conversation. |

Arisugawa-sanso
features an extensive art collection including potteries,
screens,
decorated plates and dishes by Rosanjin, who is
regarded as the father of modern
Japanese ceramic art. The 15th owner had a close
friendship with him, supporting him
with other ryokan owners in the neighborhood by
purchasing his paintings and other
art works when he was still an unknown artist. The
early works of Rosanjin that the
property possesses are very unique. |
