Born in Toyama Prefecture in Japan
in 1969, Hiroshi Kuchiki went abroad for the first time
while he was a university student. While staying in
Hawaii for a month, he was immensely and profoundly
impressed by the different culture, scenery and aura
he encountered there. He took great pleasure in exploring
the world, visiting 15 countries in the subsequent five
years.
After graduating from Hokuriku University
in 1992, Kuchiki spent two years working for one of
the leading Japanese travel agencies specializing in
cut-rate airline tickets in the midst of relentless
competition among rival companies trying to steer customers
towards the mass-market. Having his grave doubts about
the potential for the business, he resigned from the
corporation and found new employment as a land operator
in Hawaii selling package products to Japanese travel
agencies, expecting the wholesale market to flourish.
Two years later he decided to leave the position, only
to realize that he felt himself being thrust into the
same type of stagnant and meaningless rivalry, as he
had experienced in his former retail job. His disappointment
with and the gloomy prospects of the Japanese travel
industry led him to conclude that there was no future
in the trade. He made up his mind to abandon the industry
once and for all.
In 1996, however, a significant
turning point in his life came. When some Japanese hotel
enthusiasts had just begun to talk about Amanresorts,
Kuchiki visited three Amanresorts operating in Bali
as a guest to experience the resorts first-hand. Having
been met with superior hospitality in the small-scale
luxurious hotels, he fully understood why Amanresorts
attracts a great many enthusiasts all over the world,
in spite of its sky-high suite rates. The concept of
Amanresorts, which was completely different from Kuchiki's
previous business objectives and the modus operandi
of the whole tourism industry, inspired him to establish
magellan resorts & trust inc, an innovative travel
agency that places tremendous emphasis on hotels rather
than destinations, deals solely with small-scale hotels
and puts the highest priority on consumer satisfaction
without focusing on discounts. .
Magellan resorts & trust inc
commenced operation in Kanazawa in November 1998, launched
by Hiroshi Kuchiki, the CEO. While the majority of travel
agencies in Japan were offering low-priced and low-quality
packages in an attempt to direct their efforts towards
the mass-market, he decided to focus on high-quality
and value-added trips, aiming at the largest market
share in Japan of customers heading for Amanresorts.
Initially he underwent financial hardship since he lacked
capital and trust, coupled with his extremely unusual
business policy targeting the luxury travel market.
His unique business objectives and
concept were gradually and steadily spread and shared
through the Internet and enabled him to increase his
clients throughout Japan. Within three years his company's
market share of Amanresorts ranked with the best in
Japan and his company became the focus of attention.
In October 2002, magellan resorts & trust inc offered
stocks for public subscription and the total amount
of capital has now soared to 60 million yen.
Since 2005 Kuchiki has embarked
on a new project that focuses on numerous quality resorts
and tour plans in Japan for the benefit of foreign travelers
visiting Japan. Taking full advantage of his considerable
experience sending Japanese customers to Amanresorts,
he hopes to return the same favor to travelers heading
towards Japan.
